This is a splendid outside podcast. It even had my butler dancing with his feather duster in the air.

I have listened to this many times whilst penning my memoirs.

This was fantastic. Super funny. You could hear the Delta woman trying not to laugh -- the fact she thought this was legit was what made this so funny.

I am also impressed on how calm you sounded during this luggage BS. I would have lost my temper.

Hope you do more of this. Great stuff.

Oh Madge...the things you discuss are sensitive issues and you raise many good points.

Your frustration is warranted and I understand that sometimes it's easy to act out your anger against those who mean no harm. Problem is, a lot of people mean no harm and casually use the word "gay" and "fag" as derogatory words. I've said it for a while now: Homosexuals are the ONLY minority that the media feels free to make fun of. Sad.

I'm as guilty as the rest of 'em but I'm working on not saying "that's gay" as much. It's a small step but all big boners start off as half-chubbies.

I’m as guilty as the rest of ‘em but I’m working on not saying “that’s gay” as much. It’s a small step but all big boners start off as half-chubbies.

Richard,

I don't know you very well but have come to know and love that CUNT you created on YR. Even if she is a character, she is real because she's human and an extension of you. I was suprised that Adam reacted the way he did because I thought he realized that Madge was a CUNT.

On the use of the word CUNT or FAG? I have no problem with either when they are used in comedy. People that have a problem with these words being used at all need to get over it..

Don't much like your Madge character you just use the word cunt (which for me is what I consider the most derogatory term to wemon out there) to many times; but I am very impressed with this episode of your pod-cast in response to Adam Curry's Rant :)

Best wishes

Richard.
i have not listened toyour rebuttal yet, but i will tonight.
as someone still in the closet, i don't mind the word (fag) , and if we (the gay community) can use it than why can't others.
it's those millitant gays (such as the way you were on the show that adam played) that keep me from coming out. i admit that i have not listened to your show. i have only heard the segemts adam played on DSC.

[...] I dragged Kirk along, and met up with Scott from the Night Nurse Show. We met Adam Curry (actually a nice bloke, much taller in real life!)...we talked about commercialism in podcasting (surprise!) with which I disagreed his stance, and pointed out he couldn't sell Radio Clash (he hadn't heard of RC apparently) and I asked him why he stopped playing mashups and why did he say they were a fad Also talked about the whole recent Madge 'faggot' issue, and about Guildford with me and Kirk - we're both from there so know the area well.
I'd give up on the rolling eyes...I've been to several arts and crafts stores, and couldn't find any...you'll just have to use jellybeans instead.

Also, if you're a kettle, you really need to protect yourself from rust. I recommend a thorough scrub with Formula 409, followed by a coating of WD-40.

Ok, so I just had to hear the response. I can tell you are in damage control mode and it sounds like plenty of people told you that you made a mistake. I don't think you've changed though.

I just heard you state in this podcast that "it bothers me that some women find the word cunt offensive."

Yet, people saying "fag" is a big problem for you.

Hello pot? Yeah, this is kettle calling.

Hey Richard,

I really agree with your idea of the use of derogatory words and people say they are supposed to be used only by certain groups. I hate when anyone uses the term nigger and I’d cuss a black person out just as fast as a white person if either used it with me. You make so many great points about the use of words and how you can at times look beyond the use of derogatory words, though they are hurtful, and see the person or their point. I know you, as well as others, can see the difference between people who use these words because they don’t think independently of social “normsâ€? (?) and others (like Dancehall artists) who use these words to incite hate and violence.

Your question about the use of the word cunt and fag reminded me of how some people try to establish a difference between the words nigger and nigga. Nigga is supposed to be the “positive term and nigger has the negative connotation. I personally don’t see the difference because for a lot of black people it doesn’t matter how it’s said but who it comes from. As long as any derogatory word’s use is accepted in society I feel it’s a problem.

Extreme personas like Madge and Ragan’s Phelps characters represent the extent of how things could be much worse it those personas were the standard. I remember you being upset that Ragan had to explain his art form to his listeners but his explanation of why it was important to do what was unexpected really helped me get his message better. I was having trouble figuring out the difference between the real Ragan and the actor Ragan, and it bothered me. As long at the character is kept separate from the actor, it’s easier to accept that it’s a persona/act and appreciate it as an art form.

I love the persona of Madge. She’s like that aunt that is totally inappropriate but makes a point and truly cares about the people around her, she’s just an extreme version. Madge is rude and brash, at other times, raw and open. Listening to your podcast has opened me to that part of myself that is like Madge, just as listening to Wanda has allowed me to look at my self-esteem and improve it, (PNS -> funny/silly).

Anyways…love the show and Madge, and I appreciate to look into Richard and the explanation/evaluation of the message you want to send.

I think he's talking about the part where you mentioned that until people stop disrespecting you, you will continue to disrespect them and all other groups (about 17 min. in)...at least that's part I think he means.

But I lived my life this way once, and it only attracted more hostility (and it didn't make people "hang their heads, abashed at their shitty behavior," as I had hoped it would. I just sort of walked around all the time with my big fat hackles up, and got really punchy. So please don't travel down my road! ;-)

dearest richard
i am very proud of you. this is good. very good.
as far as the properation (sp?) of words, i use them. i call people cunts - regardless of gender. i call people bitches - regardless of gender. i call people fags - regardless of gender.
i call things gay, when they are.

a dyke/dike is something used to prevent flooding.

i remember calling some one a bitch on a film set and the assistant to the director came at me with:
'i don't like that word'
and i said:'have you ever seen a female dog in heat? bleeding everywhere, making a mess, for me to clean up?' it's all in the context in which the word is used. and words need to be taken back, so that they are used appropriately.

i really think that you and mr.curry owe it to your listeners to have an open discussion, on air, about the appropriation of certain words and their e/affect on people, your listeners.

people need to read the book cunt. speaking of which, so do i...

love to you richard. you and mr.curry have generated a very valid, and much needed, dialouge.

ps - little britain is available in canada and on cable: bbc america.
your closing song is TOPS!

Richard, while washing a sheep wool fleece something very simple and profound came to me. You never know where you'll find inspiration, eh?
Your comment is the very point we both want to make I think! No, I DON'T understand what it is like to lose a gay unrecognized lover but that's exactly the sort of thing I DO want to understand! That one episode where you were in the apartment, was that the day of the funeral maybe? THAT was what I needed to hear to try and understand better! The video of scattering the ashes, that helped me 'see'. That told me about your world. Honestly, it didn't seem altogether different than losing a hetero lover, but that in itself was a very important point. We are different, but not entirely. Your love for your spouse was no less than my love for mine, but you didn't have the social 'norms' and support I might have. That was abundantly clear on a visceral level. Your memory of the Vietnam coverage is VERY similar to mine, and I've never heard anyone else comment on it, but look how different and same our reactions were. Help me to see these moments. Make them emotional and in my face, but don't yell (read: language) so loud that I can't hear you. Go back to that one episode about Juan. There isn't half the language in that one. It wasn't needed.
I have to admit though. In this podcast and these messages, I'm learning that I might really like Richard. Madge...she'll always be abrasive. :)

Hey, Richard,

Firstly, what a lovely and amazing podcast. It was honest, clear, humble, direct, and affirmative. It's this sort of communication that makes podcasting so rich and exciting.

I've listened to Yeast Radio, YR2 (when it's Madge or you), and Insane Films since last May. I have enjoyed so much of what you have produced. I look forward to your work, Wanda's, Ragan's, and your combined efforts.

Honestly, there are times when some of the terms cause me to wince. I appreciate the ironic context that these are used in, but other times it does hurt to hear "bitch", "whore", "chink", etc. For example, sometimes it seems like Rachel is honestly hurt by the terminology and I wonder if the joke goes too far.

I think part of the problem is that I have said some of the same things in my own head, but without the irony or joking - more due to my own internalized racism, sexism, etc-ism. So sometimes I wonder if my listening to these terms undermines or reinforces what is already problematic inside me. BTW, that's my problem, not yours; I only write this to make the observation due to the themes that have come up in your shows as well as with ETHS, etc.

Also, I really appreciated how you could acknowledge that sometimes there may be some mysogony behind your words (although I think Ragan was correct when he said that you do it out of a place of love). We humans can have so many mixed motivations unbeknownst to ourselves.

One last thing, although I understand Adam Curry's anger about what happened - and yes, I'd be angry, too - I don't agree with his statements about your talent or your shows. Have there been times that the show was flat, shrill, or unfunny? Sure. But, it's a daily show and that's a lot of time to work with. Also, although you may have been influenced by Stern, you definitely have your own style, manner, voice, etc. And you are damn funny! In fact, I find you funnier that Stern. And you've only done this for a year or two, while Stern has had a few decades to develop his shtick and show.

Anyway, I plan to continue to listen. There's always something there, even in the midst of all of the shit (both literally and figuretively).

Now take another deep breath and get back to work! :)

Yes, I think that is definitely a fair comment. I did not add empathy to my comments, no. One reason is that I honestly can't sincerely empathize with the loss of a Gay lover. I'm not in that type of minority and I've not even experienced the loss of my hetero lover. I refuse to belittle you or your experience by saying 'I understand.' I simply do not. I can try to imagine, but that will only be on an intellectual level and grief is so much more personal than that. If I was trying to communicate on a personal level, I guess my response would be to say I'm terribly sorry for the pain you must be going through. And to that, I am.
So my response is more one of 'business' if you will. From the perspective of the podcast as your business, then it seems to be a poor business choice to present the material in a way that is not effective to communicate your point or to attack the person that makes your business workable. Gosh that sounds cold doesn't it? Could that be part of it all? You or Madge is looking for empathy from people who are simply out to buy a product? Maybe I'm way off base here, I'm trying to think out loud. So, as a consumer what DO I want from you/Madge? I want to hear what you think about politics and what your SOLUTIONS might be. I want to hear how you feel and think about ISSUES. All sorts of issues. Sure, I want to hear how you view arts, theater, people, straight people, other gay people, children, animals, events...I don't need to know what body part goes into which orifice. One thing that AC said that I so agree with is that a person can have sex with any other person..the physical act is irrelevant. As a hetero, I can do that. Being able to LOVE another person of the same gender is what makes a person homosexual. That is something I can't understand (as you really can't understand about me) and so rely on you (metaphorically) to help me see into your world a little. I don't want to hear about the physicality of what you do, that's your personal business. I want to know about what moves your heart, not your penis. I'm no prude and I do understand that some of the 'in your face' entertainment is specific to the gay culture. I don't mind that. When my group of friends goes out to a bar, it's the same way and I'm ok with that. But they have never, in their drunkest moments used so much constant profanity that I couldn't hear what was meant as well as what was said.
